Photography
Each project represents a new discovery, a personal journey, and the end and beginning of a new chapter.

This exhibition is the culmination of the BA (hons) Degree in Photography at Canterbury Christ Church University and presents a major project from each of the graduating students. Here we see projects made by photographers at the beginning of their lives as artists, if not their lives as creative practitioners. It is these past and sometimes personal experiences that can influence and inspire the final year practical projects. The work in this show signifies much about creative practice and critical engagement in photography. It demonstrates how, in the final year of study, students immerse themselves in their research and, by understanding contexts and making connections, projects can be conceived, refined and delivered in a broad range of interesting ways.
This final collection of work gives an insight into the range of contemporary issues that impact on the students’ lives, which is further explored through the photographic work on display. Here each student is using photography as a method for storytelling or communication, but uses it to explore diverse topics in original and creative ways. For example, the work on show examines contemporary notions of body image and portraiture, explores important areas of representation including mental health, LGBTQI and spirituality, but also uses a range of documentary practices that question and challenge the nature of photography as a medium itself. As lecturers one constant remains in the ever changing, HE landscape: the pleasure of supervising projects and seeing the creative outputs emerge. Each project represents a new discovery, a personal journey, and the end and beginning of a new chapter. We watch with excitement as careers develop and new stories are told.
